Cool things online #1
In the wonderful chaos of information that is the Internet, we regularly find great websites. We hope to feature some of them on our websites today and into the future… Here is our first selection…
- For job hunters…. Fellow library patron Judy Greene passed along two great websites for job hunters. The first is quintcareers.com which provides a plethora of “timely and topical tips for springboarding careers.” Of special note is a section for students who are just starting into the work world! The second link is indeed.com which allows you to hunt through dozens of job hunting websites with just one search.
- Books for Guys… If you have a young man in your life, you know that their minds just work differently. As a result, they like to read different books than the young women in our lives. Well, award-winning author Jon Scieszka has created a website to help solve the puzzle of finding great books for guys. Check out GuysRead.com today!
- Local government online… madisonTV15.com is Jefferson County’s public access cable television station. It specializes in local programming including televising local government meetings. However, knowing that not everyone has cable, the station organizers created this new website so they will now feature their programming on their new website as well!
- Free Sci-Fi… If you like science fiction or fantasy, Tor Books has got your ticket. If you register at their website, you’ll receive Tor’s newsletter and links to download free digital books every week. Their next free book is “Old Man’s War” by John Scalzi, who was the 2006 winner of the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. Next week will be “Through Wolf’s Eyes” by Jane Lindskold.

Ah yes, I’d forgotten about that. It happened on Google as well. Indeed, the web trick is commonly called a “Google Bomb.”
It happens because search engines base their rankings in part on how webpages link to each.
Thus, when a large number of liberal-progressive websites collectively linked that phrase to the president’s biography, President Bush got Google-bombed.
Accordingly, conservative websites hit back and the very same Google bomb also hits former President Jimmy Carter.
The “Yahoo bomb” still works, but Google short-circuited the bombs by changing how their site ranks results.
Here’s a link for more information on Google Bombs.
