Get a Library Card!
To borrow materials from the Madison-Jefferson County Public Library you must have a valid MJCPL library card.
There are three option for obtaining a library card at no charge
- Currently reside or own property in Jefferson County.
- Have a valid library card from an Indiana library which is on the Reciprocal Borrowing Covenant list (see listing below); or
- Be a current student at Hanover College or IVY Tech State College in Madison.
Identification required:
For option 1 (Jefferson County residents)
- Proof of identification: Driver’s license or state identification card.
- Proof of address: If your license does not have your current address, bring proof of address such as: rental, lease or mortgage transaction papers; canceled business mail (envelope and contents); recent utility hookup orders; Indiana vehicle title or registration; monthly bank statement; or Indiana court documents.
- If you live out of county, but own property in Jefferson County, please bring a copy of your current property tax bill.
- Cards are good for two years.
For Option 2 (reciprocal borrowing)
- Proof of identification and address as stipulated above.
- Your current library card from your home library.
- These cards are good for one year.
- Regional libraries in this program are listed below.
For Option 3 (students)
- Proof of identification and address as noted in option 1
- Your IVY Tech or Hanover College identification card.
- These cards are good until the end of the enrolled term.
Other options
There are options for long-term visitors, out-of-state residents and Indiana residents from communities not under the reciprocal borrowing agreement. These option require either annual payments or deposits. For more information, call us at (812) 265-2744 or email our circulation desk
