Stuart Woods books Madison's Don Wells

If you’re reading Stuart Woods latest book Shoot Him If He Runs you might be in for a surprise on page 83 — Madison’s Don Wells appears in the book!

However, you might not have recognized the tall and thin Madisonian in the story … well, we’ll let Don himself tell you about it…

At the Girls Inc. auction and fund-raiser in spring of 2006, I purchased the right to have my name used as a character in an upcoming Stuart Woods novel.

Since the proceeds of the auction were for such a great cause and I was a big fan of Woods, I wound up paying $1,200 for the item.

Shortly thereafter, I emailed a lengthy biography to Woods listing my background and hobbies. The character was to have been in the book coming out in fall of 2006.

When my name didn’t appear in that book or in the following book, Peter Woodward, who had arranged for the donation, began sending emails to Woods inquiring why my name hadn’t appeared.

We finally got a short cryptic email back saying I would be included in the book to be published in the spring of 2008.

Much to my surprise, while reading “Shoot Him If He Runs,” published this November, I found myself on page 83 described as a short, thick, black man running Wells Aviation on St. Marks Island on the Caribbean. When asked by Stone Barrington how many planes were there, I counted to seven on my fingers before replying.

I’m still glad I bought the item, but I guess you have to be careful about irritating the author before he writes the book. My character is included in the dialog for a little over two pages and my name is mentioned 10 times so I shouldn’t feel slighted.

My wife, Joyce, and I moved here in May of 2005 and I have been a frequent visitor to the library and gotten to know many of the desk personnel quite well. They are always helpful and friendly and I look forward to my visits to pick up my latest book selection.

I hope this is helpful background for anyone reading the book.
