Veteran's Day program on Major Sam Woodfill
Join us on Veteran’s Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 6:30 p.m. to learn about the most decorated soldier of World War I — Major Samuel Woodfill who grew up here in Jefferson County.
Ben Newell has written a book about Woodfill and will talk about our hero’s life.
Among the medals earned, Woodfill received among others, the Medal of Honor (presented by General Pershing), the French Croix de Guerre with palm, and made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, Italy’s Meriot di Guerra, and the Cross of Prince Danilo, First Class.

Sam is a relative of mine but I can honestly say that Mr. Newell knows more than I do about him.

A little known National hero who matched the exploits, and perhaps exceeded them, of Alvin York. An expedition should be undertaken to discover the exact site of his exploits, and insure that an appropriate marker commemorates his efforts in 1918. They did so with Alvin York. Major Woodfill’s achievements are no less. His story should be mandatory reading in a Leadership Manual.

Sam Woodfill was my grandfather’s uncle. Lowell Thomas wrote a book called “Woodfill of the Regulars” I have read it many times over the years. It is a very informative on the life of Sam Woodfill. When I was younger in my early teens I tried to get information through the U.S. Army Archives, but they had a fire and alot of records were lost. I am very proud of him and what he did by serving this country for est. forty years in the military.
