Title
Coal Wagon-McKim Coal Company-Southwest Corner of Second and Vine Streets
Subject
Business enterprises; Transportation; Horse-drawn vehicles
Description
According to Harry Lemen's commentary, this was the last horse drawn coal wagon in Madison. Notice the smaller wheels in the front of the wagon. This was for maneuvering into tight spaces. Many folks who had coal furnaces will remember the clinkers that formed from the coal. A lot of the fireplaces in homes also burned coal. Most people under 30 years of age have never seen coal, but at one time, it warmed, moved and employed most everyone in the country.
