Description
Walter Carl Mundt, Sr., was born in Berlin, Germany on June 16, 1862. He came to America in 1866 at the age of four with his parents, Charles and Bertha Krahn Mundt. The family located in Cincinnati, Ohio. His father passed away in 1881 and his mother took Walter and his brother, Edward, and returned to Germany. After a short visit there, Walter came back alone to the Cincinnati-Covington area, where he continued to learn the confectioner's trade. On September 8, 1885, at Newport, Kentucky, he married Anna Martha Hidden, a native of Holland. Walter and Anna had five children. In 1893 Walter moved his family to Madison and opened a retail confectionery at 322 West Main Street which he operated for 10 years. He sold this business and organized the Mundt-Hidden Candy Company, locating at 112 East Second Street, selling both wholesale and retail. Sometime between 1912 and 1923, he relocated his business to 207 West Main Street, selling under the name of W. Mundt and Sons. Walter Carl died suddenly on October 20, 1927. A picture of the West Main Street business is in this collection and more information can be found there.
