Decar, Louis (Louie)-view 2

Louis Decar was born June 30, 1923 in his beloved Madison. His father, also Louis, was the chief florist at the Madison State Hospital until his death in 1924. His mother, Helen, who instilled in him a deep love and respect for his hometown, raised him. Louis, or Louie, as he is most commonly called, went to school here, graduating from Madison High School in 1941. He served in World War II and returned here to work at the Pearl Packing Company for over 30 years where he was in charge of the once-famous Fairmount Brand division. After the demise of the packing plant he worked at Butler Dairy and the Madison School Corporation until his retirement. Louie and his wife, Mary, lived downtown in Madison for many years but haved lived "on the hilltop" for quite some time now. Mr Decar is well known as one of the most avid basketball fans in the state. He has always been a faithful backer of the Madison Cubs and the Indiana Hoosiers. He is also an expert on the history of steamboats, giving talks and demonstrations to school children and civic groups. His knowledge of steamboats, old and new, is legendary. He is now serving as the Jefferson County Historian and he is a volunteer and consultant for the library digitization program. His help with the Lemem photograph collection has been most appreciated. You might say Louie Decar and Madison are synonymous and we are lucky to have them both.
