Description

In 1887 this building served as a boot and shoe store owned by George Diedrick. It was also Todd's Book Store. In 1890 Louis Holwager's Grocery Store was housed here. According to the city directories, the Western Union Telegraph Co. was once headquartered in the building in 1912 and before Mr. Walter Mundt, Sr. purchased the building for a confectionery, it was a sweets shop run by Holwager. By 1917 Walter C. Mundt, Sr. moved his candy shop from 319 West Second Street to the Main Street location. The sign over the door read "W. Mundt and Sons" and after Mr. Mundt's death in 1927 the family continued the business. In 1933 it became known as "Betty Mundt's Candies" and from here Betty Mundt sold her famous "fish" candy until 1966. It was a delicious hard candy in a variety of flavors shaped like a fish. Betty continued to sell her candy on special occasions for some time but finally the building lay idle for some years, with the contents just as they were when the store closed its doors. In the late 1990's the building was once more opened under the name "Mundt JWI Confectionery." Fish candy is still available.
