Description

The home was built sometime before 1860 for the Captain Nathan Powell Family, a well known businessman in Madison. It was long known as one of the most beautiful homes in the city. The home originally was set back off the street and boasted lovely lawns and landscaping. There was a carriage house at the back of the building facing Elm Street, with an entry large enough for horses and carriages to pass through. Captain Powell died in 1882 and his son, Edward, and his wife, Anna, took up residence in the home. After Edward's death, Anna continued to live in the home until 1929. At that time the library sold bonds in order to buy the property. The library moved into the building in 1930. In 1967 the building underwent major changes. A new facade was built taking the front of the building to the sidewalk. Columns and a new entryway were added. On the Elm Street side, a new auditorium was added. A conference room and additional space were added upstairs, while downstairs a large reading room with reference section was added. The library will soon celebrate 75 years in the grand old building.
