"Going Places with Booker Bee" Summer Reading Cheatsheet

So you’re joining us on a voyage across the U.S. by reading. Welcome! The biggest question you may have is how to find books that take place in each part of the United States?

Here are some tips!

Tip One :: Pick your favorite subject!

You can pick just about any subject that interests you.

One of my favorite books is “Rocket Boys” by Homer Hickam. It’s about a young man in 1950s West Virginia who wants to bypass working in the coal mines to become a rocket scientist. Definite culture-class. If you read this book, you’ve just taken a “trip” to West Virginia and fulfilled the southeast region!

Try it. Just about anything American will get you traveling! The Battle of Gettysburg, Hurricane Katrina, the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, NASCAR racing at Daytona — it all has geography that will fits our 2008 Summer Reading club.

Sometimes the location may not be obvious, but it’s there. John Grisham’s first non-fiction book “The Innocent Man”? Oklahoma.

Tip Two :: Read your favorite genre!

Let’s say you love mysteries? Pick any mystery that takes place in the United States and you’re set. William Tapply’s Brady Coyne series takes place in Boston. Joan Hess’ Maggody series is in Arkansas. Our very own Joe Hensley’s Don Robak books here in Indiana. Tony Hillerman in New Mexico.

Even the future works— you could try J.D. Robb’s “In Death” mystery-sci fi-romance series that takes place in 2060 New York City.

Tip Three :: Search our online catalog

These first two tips will likely get you through your first regions. After that you might have to search for a book.

A fun way to take a stab in the dark is to type in the name of a state into our online catalog. You’ll see all kinds of books from fiction to non-fiction.

Tip Four :: NoveList!

With your library card you also have access to a special fiction book finding website called NoveList.

In the search box, simply type in some words related to the book you’re looking for such as “romance mystery ohio” and romantic mysteries (or mysterious romances) that take place in Ohio will pop up. Find a title that sounds interesting? Go to our catalog to see if we have the book.

Tip Five :: Ask!

We’re here for you. We can help you find fun books to read this summer. Just ask.

Have Fun!
